Democrats Mount Hypocritical Age Attacks on Trump
That Trump and Biden’s ages are in any way comparable is laughable, attempts to paint them as such are peak hypocrisy.
The old adage goes that if Democrats didn’t have double standards they’d have no standards at all. And boy is that adage really apt now. The party that for years lied to the American public about the decrepit corpse currently occupying the Oval Office’s health is now trying to convince you that Donald Trump is too old to run.
These attacks aren’t entirely new. Prior to the disastrous debate that exposed Biden’s declining mental state to the globe, various outlets attempted to pull whataboutisms on Trump’s age. “Biden and Trump are both old. So why are voters keying in on only one of them?” NBC asked, while The New York Times argued “Trump Is Really Old, Too.”
It is undeniable that Trump is old. That much is not in contention. What is in contention, however, is how age impacts his mental faculties. As a note, what most people meant when they said Biden is too old to be president is that he was showing signs of the wear and tear of aging, not that he is literally too old.
For example, Bernie Sanders is 82, making him a year older than the President. He’s still energetically making his terrible policy proposals with much the same vim and vigor as he did when he was first elected in 2007.
Republican Senator Chuck Grassley is 90, and seems quite fit for his age. There are very few fear mongering articles about how Grassley is going to keel over in the Senate any day now, and that he must retire for the good of Iowans.
The same could not be said for Senator Mitch McConnel, who at 82-years-old is seemingly one stroke away from meeting the reaper. After several high profile incidents where McConnell appeared to freeze up, calls immediately came from high profile Republicans including Trump for him to step down.
And you might remember that there were several articles arguing that the late Senator Diane Feinstein should have retired before she eventually died. Watching Feinstein decay before our very eyes and reading how she would frequently forget where she was or what she was doing was a visceral sign of the ravages of age.
Biden’s failing mental faculties place him squarely in the McConnel/Feinstein camp of “too old to serve.” If he had the same energy as Grassley or Sanders, this conversation wouldn’t be happening. And it’s why media attacks against Trump for his age fall flat.
Polling data shows that while Americans had concerns with both Biden and Trump’s ages, Trump got far less flack for his age than Biden did. 59% of Americans said both were too old to serve, but an additional 27% said just Biden was.
Is it ideal that Trump is that old? No. It would be preferable to have a candidate who would be younger than 80 years old when they left office, if only to remove that line of attack from the Democrat’s arsenal. But when there is a clear difference in mental capacity between one candidate and another, those arguments somewhat fall flat.
In the face of one of the most traumatic moments of his life, a botched assassination attempt, Trump did not collapse or fail. He stood, raised his fist to the camera in defiance, and posed for the most iconic political photo of the last decade.
That Trump and Biden’s ages are in any way comparable is laughable, and attempts to paint them as such in the face of repeated attempts by Team Blue to lie to the American people about Biden’s health are the peak of hypocrisy.
Democrats can’t attack Trump on his record, so they repeatedly attack him on his character. This, like many of their other attempts to paint him as unfit for office, will fall flat.
Americans are sick of Democratic hypocrisy when it comes to age. To them, it’s all old hat.
