Democrats Claim to Defend Democracy. Their Actions Say Otherwise
From denying their political opposition ballot access to subverting the will of the voters if it goes against the party elite’s positions, Democrats will strangle democracy dead to achieve their ends.
It’s become somewhat of a meme at this point. “Vote for Democrats to save our democracy!” The President has routinely claimed that should former President Trump win American democracy would be at serious risk. Meanwhile, his Democratic colleagues in the media have prognosticated the end of American civilization as we know it.
Sorry guys, but actions speak louder than words. The only one killing democracy here is you.
The most obvious example of this is the repeated attempts by the Biden administration and Democrats to use lawfare to kneecap their political opposition. Multiple Democratic run states including Colorado and Maine attempted to kick Trump off the ballot in the name of saving democracy.
Perry Bacon Jr. from the Washington Post concurred, writing officials “deserve praise for aggressively defending American democracy from Trump, which far too many others — including the Justice Department under President Biden — have failed to do.”
The Post’s slogan “Democracy Dies in Darkness” must be ironic, because I can’t think of anything more fascistic than endorsing a decision that says Americans don’t get to vote for a man that got more than 74 million votes in 2020.
It took the Supreme Court, a body which Democrats have openly pushed to stack because they don’t get what they want, to tell these blue states to cut it out.
And that’s not even diving into the multitude of frivolous lawsuits targeting Trump in places like New York and Georgia. Even former New York governor Andrew Cuomo had to admit the New York hush money case smacked of politics.
“If his name was not Donald Trump and if he wasn’t running for president,” Cuomo told Bill Maher on his show, “I’m the former AG of New York, I’m telling you that case would’ve never been brought.”
But Democrats are no strangers to removing Americans’ ability to vote for the candidates they want. In North Carolina this week, Democratic officials on the state’s Board of Elections voted to block three third party groups from appearing on November’s ballot.
RFK Jr.’s We the People Party, Cornell West’s Justice for All Party, and the Constitution Party of North Carolina were all blocked from ballot access on a party line vote.
And why were these third parties blocked from ballot access? Why to protect democracy of course! Democratic board member Jeff Carmon claimed “What I want to make sure happens is what you guys said you want to do, is what’s actually happening, and people are not being misled. That’s what I need to know, that the people that signed knew what they were signing up for”
Democrats think Americans are too stupid to know what party they’re signing up for, and thus need to be “protected” from themselves. “We have to make sure you vote the right way, guys! Don’t you care about democracy?”
If those two onerous examples of the Democrats’ anti-democratic tendencies aren’t enough, consider Biden’s own renomination process. Now that Biden’s horrific debate performance has many Democrats spooked, there’s active talk of replacing him with another candidate before the convention in August.
How democratic! Now that the people have voted in the primaries for Biden, all of sudden party elites get to swap him out for someone totally random without consulting their rank-and-file members. Democrats sure love democracy?
If only there had been calls to switch Biden earlier…Oh wait, there were.
As it became clearer to the American public that Biden’s faculties were quickly deteriorating, some Democrats argued for the DNC to hold primary debates and allow other Democrats a path to potentially replace the President at the top of the ticket. The DNC declined.
Many fumed at the time that the DNC was subverting the will of the voters by refusing to allow debates and seemingly coronating Biden again. Former co-chair of Bernie Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign Nina Turner posted on X “The DNC refusing to hold a single primary debate is undemocratic and robs the voters of choice. No one who feels confident in their record and/or ideas would hesitate to stand on them. The DNC should hold debates. This is supposed to be a democratic process.”
Sanders would have a leg to stand on. It’s widely accepted that the DNC basically rigged the 2016 primary to hand the nomination to Hilary Clinton against the will of the voters.
There are countless examples of why people just don’t buy the lie that Democrats are the party more concerned about saving American democracy. From denying their political opposition ballot access to subverting the will of the voters if it goes against the party elite’s positions, Democrats will strangle democracy dead to achieve their ends.
This plays out in polling data. A viral Washington Post/George Mason University poll indicated that a majority of voters in the key swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin indicated they trusted Trump more to handle threats to democracy than Biden.
It’s because Democrats consistently claim to be democracy’s greatest defenders while hacking it to pieces, all while claiming the GOP is responsible. Has the GOP been perfect on the question of democracy? Inarguably no. But voters are responding to the sheer hypocrisy of claiming to protect voters from authoritarianism while simultaneously seizing as much power as they can and blocking the average American from the process.
When a pillar of your campaign to the American people is based on protecting their right to be a part of the electoral process, you have to actually follow through with it.
Democracy is in trouble, and there’s donkey hooves leading to the culprit.
