Bodily Autonomy Endgame: From Transgenderism to Suicide
When society begins to view death as a legitimate escape route, rather than a tragedy to be avoided, there is a profoundly troubling future ahead.
In the early 90s and 2000’s, back before transgenderism completely dominated all sectors of American life, teenagers expressed their angst and sorrow through eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. They were the social contagion of the age, diseases that spread like wildfire both through burgeoning social media channels and the hallways of local schools.
Eventually, eating disorders were usurped by the gender cultists, though thankfully that appears to be reaching some form of zenith as well. The question thus becomes, what is the next stage of self-destructive social behavior?
In what I fear is the ultimate expression of the West’s newest obsession with the death drive, the next frontier for depressive young adults looking to escape their problems will be government sanctioned and assisted suicide.
Sound hyperbolic? I have the proof.
The push to give those suffering mental anguish increasing autonomy to end their lives already has precedence in the West. Consider the case of 29-year-old Dutch woman Zoraya ter Beek. Throughout her short life, Ter Beek suffered from autism, depression, and anxiety. She was bullied as a child and felt as though she never fit in.
Eventually, her troubles led her to apply to the Netherlands’ Euthanasia Expertise Center to request assisted suicide. The request was eventually granted. Ter Beek became one of an increasing number of Dutch individuals to have the state help kill her.
Closer to home, Canada has become infamous as a place where the state actively encourages its citizens to take their own lives through a ghoulish “Medical Assistance in Dying” or MAID program. There are scores of stories where Canadians who need a little extra help with a physical or mental disability are told, unprompted, that they can be killed with the state’s help.
In a horrifying way, the groundwork for the next generation of self-destructive young adults is being lain today by the transgender movement. The reality of many young adults who go through puberty blockers and transition surgeries is one of pain and suffering on a scale few can imagine.
Detranisitoners, those who reversed course on their transgender lifestyles to revert back to their actual sex, have a plethora of side effects from their time on puberty blockers or from surgeries. Many have a low to non-existent libido, women retain their masculine vocal timbre, and boys have difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection.
And of course, there’s the physical scars that never fade from mastectomies or vaginoplasties.
As minors increasingly gain the ability to consent to these permanent, life-altering procedures, what is to stop them from taking the ultimate step towards seizing their own destinies and just ending it all? Indeed, unconditional bodily autonomy is a central pillar of the current leftist zeitgeist that allows children to lop off perfectly healthy body parts and for mothers to terminate their children in-utero.
It becomes very difficult to effectively argue against “the right to die” when you can practically put yourself at death’s door with cheers from cynical and nihilistic leftists. Across the West, organizations like Death with Dignity argue that it is a human right to be able to kill yourself, harkening back to that newly sacrosanct idea that true fulfilment comes from complete and total bodily autonomy, regardless of external social impacts.
The West’s obsession with centering every ethical conversation around vague concepts of bodily autonomy or freedom, alongside a rise in fatalistic cynicism amongst younger people can only result in an increase in the death drive.
When society begins to view death as a legitimate escape route, rather than a tragedy to be avoided, there is a profoundly troubling future ahead. Civilization cannot long stand the fundamental warping of the basic desire for humans to live. Soon, the West will face the culmination of dangerous ideologies that treat the body as something infinitely malleable, subject to the whims of individual choice or even the choice to end it all.
In this new world, death on demand will be seen as a human right. Thought those telehealth gender transition diagnoses were bad? Get ready for telehealth suicide prescriptions.
